The National Bank of Ukraine (Ukrainian :Національний банк України), formerly the Ukrainian branch of the Central Bank of the Soviet Union. After the collapse of the Soviet Union, it gradually assumed the functions of the Central Bank of Ukraine from the beginning of 1992.
History
According to Article 99 of the Ukrainian Constitution of 1996, the main task of the National Bank of Ukraine is to maintain the stability of the national currency, the hryvnia. The National Bank Building, which houses the headquarters of the National Bank of Ukraine, was built between 1902 and 1934 and was the seat of the Ukrainian branch of the Russian Imperial State Bank.
