History

Van Lanschot Kempen

The history of Van Lanschot Kempen dates back to July 22, 1737, when Cornelis van Lanschot founded a trading company in Schertogenbosch. It initially traded in colonial goods in the areas of Brabant and Limburg, the Duchy of Liege, the Duchy of Cliffs, the Duchy of Julich, and most of Blatter, Belgium. It soon became involved in the collection and discounting of customers' bills of exchange and the exchange of foreign currencies. In 1901, Van Lanschot Kempen changed from a general partnership to a limited partnership under the name F. van Lanschot.

Until 1954, Van Lanschot Kempen's banking business was carried out from its office in Schertogenbosch. After that, it gradually expanded its activities by opening more offices (mainly in the southern part of the Netherlands). In the early 1970s, it acquired several Dutch banks. In the 1980s, it opened several offices in the central part of the Netherlands and in 1991 began an expansion strategy. In 1991, it also opened an office in Belgium.

In 1973, National Westminster Bank (NatWest) acquired a minority stake in Belegginompagnie, the parent company of Van Lanschot, becoming the first non-family shareholder from the early 1990s until the sale of its interest in 1994. NatWest was the majority shareholder. In June 1999, Van Lanschot's equity securities were listed on Euronext Amsterdam.

In 2004, Van Lanschot Kempen acquired CenE Bankiers (financial services in the healthcare sector) from ING Bank N.V.

In 2007, Van Lanschot Kempen acquired Kempen & Co., which was founded in Amsterdam in 1903 by Arines Johannes Kempen and his partner Martinus Dirk de Lange as an independent stockbroker. The commodities exchange Beurs van Berlage opened only a month ago, and Kempen & Co uses this exchange for trading. The company initially specialized in the trading of listed companies operating in the Dutch East Indies.

In 2013, Van Lanschot Kempen launched Evi van Lanschot. Evi van Lanschot is an online savings and investment platform that aims to extend its offerings to mass affluent clients and first-time investors.

Mercier Van Lanschot

Mercier Van Lanschot was established in 2024 by the merger of Van Lanschot Belgium (Van Lanschot Kempen Belgium office established in 1991) and Mercier Vanderlinden (established in 2000).

After selling the family stakes in AnHyp (Antwerp Hypotheekkas), Devos-Lemmens and Frisk, the Mercier and Vanderlinden families decided to entrust the management of their assets to Stéphane Mercier and Thomas Vanderlinden. Their goal is to protect and increase the purchasing power of the family's assets for future generations.

In July 2021, Van Lanschot Kempen acquired a 70% interest in Mercier Vanderlinden. Coat of arms of the family and the Van Lanschot company

Coat of arms of the Van Lanschot family

The coat of arms of the Van Lanschot Kempen is based on the coat of arms used by the Van Lanschot family since the 17th century. The Van Lanschot family appeared in Zundert in the 15th century. The name is derived from a slender plot of land or "vista" located in the village of Achtmaal. Three green trees are depicted on the silver and green cover. In front of the tree in the middle, there is a red castle. The castle may have been derived from the coat of arms of the Van Buerstede family. The motto of the coat of arms is: "Exaltabor in terra".

Het Lanschotje

The front and back of the coin het Lanschotje

After the unification of the Netherlands with Belgium in 1815 and the proclamation of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, new regulations for the monetary system had to be established. The planned large monetization project began only in 1821/1822. As a result, there was a shortage of small change. Some people, mainly merchants, looked for a temporary solution (outside the government) to circulate small coins themselves. They ordered large quantities of copper coins from Germany and brought them to the kingdom. Utrecht grocer Bleyenstein was the first to bring it to market. The coins were also put into circulation by Franciscus van Lanschot, a partner. The coin was given various nicknames: het Lanschotje, het Bossche duit or Bleyensteinse duit.

Van Lanschot Kempen is headquartered in Schertogenbosch, Hooge Steenweg 29. In addition, head office employees work in Schertogenbosch, Paleiskwartier district, and in two other buildings at the World Trade Center (Amsterdam).

The private bank has offices and customer reception desks in most large cities in the Netherlands and Belgium. In addition, the private bank has offices in Zurich and Geneva, Switzerland.
